Digital development

From an idea to a useful digital service

Start with one real problem, map the workflow and build the smallest complete product that solves it.

Describe the task in plain language

Before discussing a framework or interface, describe what someone needs to achieve. Who is the user? What information do they have? What should happen at the end? A clear answer makes the scope easier to discuss.

Map the whole workflow

A booking form needs somewhere for the booking to go. A catalogue needs an update process. A paid service needs a way to handle access and support. Map the public experience and the work behind it together.

Consider an existing foundation

Custom development is one route. Adapting a suitable existing product can be another. Compare the fit, ownership, integration requirements and recurring costs rather than judging only the initial price.

Launch a complete first version

Choose a narrow set of functions that work from beginning to end. An honest first version is more useful than a long list of buttons that do not lead anywhere. Identify any external services and configuration needed before opening the product to customers.

Learn from actual use

After launch, look at completed tasks, recurring questions and points where people stop. Use that evidence to choose the next improvement. The goal is a more useful product, not simply a longer feature list.
